Raincloud smiled, the unexpected hit colliding on her head. She backed her head off a hair and shook her head. "That's it. You've got that one down." she laughed. "The next step of that is to have your claws out, of course, we don't use that when practicing. We never waste herbs when they're not necessary." she mewed.

"Ok," Berrypaw mewed. Wow, I'm getting all these moves and questions right! I must be one of the best apprentices in the clan! She thought cockily. "Are we going to learn anything else today?" She asked, hoping the answer was yes.

Raincloud eyes widen with surprise, "Not today, we need to fish for the Clan. We can't come back empty handed. There' only a little time left until dusk so we'll have to hurry." she mewed briskly heading for the river. "Come on, Berrypaw! The last one to the river is a piece of crow-food!" she decided Berrypaw should have at least a little fun with her training so she sprinted off, hoping her apprentice would take the challenge.

Berrypaw giggled as she sprinted behind her mentor. Her eyes shone as she darted between trees and bounced over rocks. Her only guide was the tip of Raincloud's tail, which she followed through the winding forest path.

Raincloud laughed aloud, "Oh come on, you've got to be quicker than that!" she pushed farther away, her large body now seeming lithe and agile.

Berrypaw huffed and pushed her legs harder against the wet ground. She was catching up to Raincloud now, and could see her hind legs pushing against the ground. Berrypaw smiled to herself as she stared straight ahead, thinking that nothing could stop her. Suddenly, Berrypaw slipped on a very wet patch of mud and skidded forward, only to bowl head-over-paws into a clump of ferns. Berrypaw laid dazed for a second, staring up at a large, leafy tree. Then, she slowly stood up, shook herself, and took off running again. But now she was far behind Raincloud.

Raincloud found the river, and without a second thought, she jumped in, her whole body going under the soft current. She stayed there and looked for fish passing by. When she didn't hear Berrypaw, she popped her head up to where her apprentice went. "Berrypaw?"

Berrypaw sprinted to the edge of a river, skidding to a halt before she touched the water. "Do I have to jump in?" Berrypaw asked. She wasn't very excited to get her paws in the cold, swirling water.

Raincloud laughed, "No Berrypaw, you can stay on shore. This is how I fish. Do you know how to fish yet?" she asked, quickly feeling something pass her fur, she ducked her head under and clamped her strong jaws on a fish. When she came back up, she swam to shore, getting up to put her fish on the bank near Berrypaw.

"Not yet!" Berrypaw answered happily. "So are you going to teach me?" She asked quickly.

Raincloud stood beside her apprentice, "What would a RiverClan cat be without being able to fish!" she mewed. She sat up straight, "Now what you have to do is stay still. Stock still, pretend you were a stone, nothing can move you." she tried it out herself,staying so still it was hard to believe she was still breathing.

Berrypaw nodded and crouched down right on the shore of the river. She dangled her paw right above the water, holding it as still as she could. She focused on making her body still as a mountain. She tried hard to block out the rain drumming on her back; the wind whipping through her fur. She tried her best to just focus on the churning, fish-filled river.

Soon, a tiny silver fish swam right by her paw. Her heart leaped into her throat. Berrypaw shot her ginger paw into the water, trying to hook the fish with her claws. But her first swipe missed, and the fish was getting away. Berrypaw was so focused on the hunt that she ignored the frigid water and leaped in after the fish. She almost had it, but she slipped over her own paws and fell headfirst into the river. Berrypaw felt a wave of disappointment and anger as she reilized that her (almost) first catch just got away.

Raincloud laughed, "You almost had it Berrypaw!" she crouched on the bank, waiting for her to come back up. "You just scooped your paw wrong. You have to curve your paw under the fish so that your claws are facing it. Then you can bring it up and kill it quickly." she waved her tail, "Watch."

The black-she cat stood still as a stone, her blue eyes unblinking as she waited. With her gaze on the shallow river, moments slipped into minutes. When minutes turned into just over six minutes, a silver fish swam downstream. Quick as lightning, Raincloud scooped her paw in, the fish soaring out of the water as a cascade of water followed it. On the shore it fell and the RiverClan warrior leaped on it. She bit it hard on the back, it's spine snapping under her fangs. She let it lay limp on the ground as she looked back at Berrypaw.

Berrypaw's eyes widened with amazement at Raincloud's beautiful catch. Berrypaw leaped out of the icy water and shook herself quickly, frigid drops flying everywhere. "I'm gonna try now!" She declared, crouching on the bank of the river. Her brown eyes were fixed on the river; she was positive she would catch a fish now.

So she waited......and waited........and waited.....until she felt like she would explode from waiting so long. "How long will this take?" Berrypaw spat impatiently. Finally, a small black fish swam near the bank of the river. Berrypaw shot her paw in the water, turning it so that her claws faced the fish. Once the fish was in the right position, Berrypaw grabbed the fish out of the water. It landed roughly on the bank, flopping and flipping as it tried desperately to get back to the water. But Berrypaw was too quick, and she grabbed the fish in her jaws and snapped it's spine. Once she heard the satisfying crack, she plopped the fish on the ground in front of her. Her eyes glittered with self-pride; she had caught her first fish!

Raincloud purred, "Very good, Berrypaw! You learn quick, I can see you were well overdue to become an apprentice." she grinned, winking at her apprentice. "How's about you and I have a little competition?" she tempted the she-cat, motivation was the best learning technique.

Berrypaw's eyes glowed with gratitude and pride. "Thank you!" But at the mention of a challenge, her eyes narrowed and the fierce fire of competition entered her gaze. She purred with excitement; Berrypaw loved a good competition! "Ok! But I'm gonna win!" She growled playfuly. "So what's the contest?"

Raincloud growled, "I was hoping you'd say yes. We'll have a fishing competition. Whoever wins gets the other's prey for the day." she mewed, a fire lighting in her eyes. She was ready to catch as many fish as she could get her claws on. She loved the water.

"Ok!" Berrypaw squeaked. She rushed to the shore of the river and crouched down, focusing on the water. She waited and waited, but no fish wee swimming by. But Berrypaw was starting to get impatient.

Raincloud smiled and padded casually to the shore, sitting down comfortably before setting her eyes on the still, yet moving water. She let out a calm sigh and blinked, looking into the water. She took very little air, her sides moving slightly as her tail tip lay leisurely in the river. She kept her icy eyes directed at the blue water and never let her eyes blink or leave their exact gaze.

After what seemed like moons of waiting, a tiny fish swam by the shore of the river. Berrypaw shot her paw in the water, scooping out the flopping fish. She delivered a quick bite to it's head to kill it. "Ha! I caught my first one!" She said triumphantly. Then, Berrypaw turned her gaze back to the water, where she waited, concentrating on being still as stone.

Raincloud let a small smile appear on her face as she never once left the scene of the river. She kept waiting, watching as she saw what looked like a large minnow swimming towards her. She raced to dip her paw in, hoping she'd get the fish before Berrypaw. Of course, she was going to let her apprentice win. Self-esteem was good for apprentices, especially when in harsh conditions like now.
